On retirement ,  I felt I still had something to offer to the country I love and live in.  Politics, though a continuing interest, did not appeal as an occupation.   A return to practical farming was no longer a realistic option.  I had, however, steered one son and two daughters through their education, and still had one son at the local High School.  I was genuinely horrified at the eating habits of many youngsters, at the looming threat of addiction to smoking and drugs, and at the failure of many young people to take regular exercise.   I decided to try to do something about it, if only by alerting these young people to the dangers.

The Flower of Scotland Campaign, a registered charity,  came into being with the support of role models from the fields of sport, music and the media, such as Sean Connery, Evelyn Glennie, Richard Gough, Muriel Gray, Gavin Hastings, Lorraine Kelly, Hamish MacInnes, Ally McCoist, Donnie Munro , Yvonne Murray -  and David Sole,  who played a prominent part in the campaign.

I wrote the fully illustrated Towards A Healthier Scotland  to emphasise the dangers of poor habits, and suggest ways of counteracting them.  Funding  was raised by Burns suppers, parachute jumps and other means.  As a result, a free copy of the book was given to every secondary school in Scotland, together with an inspirational video  featuring eight of the role models.  Sean Connery recorded his contribution while in St Andrews to play golf.   Surplus copies of the book went on sale through Menzies newsagents and bookshops and were soon sold out.  We have not been able to reprint it because publication depended on charitable donations.
